Curious about Virtual Counselling?

Virtual counselling uses technology to overcome barriers.

Sometimes called online counselling or teletherapy, virtual counselling occurs through a technology platform instead of face-to-face in an office setting. The practice ensures that support is accessible and that people can get the help they need when distance, mobility, and other challenges get in the way. Virtual counselling is well researched and pre-dates the pandemic, though the Covid-19 public health response has accelerated its broad availability.

Pivot Counselling proudly offers support by video or phone so you can access the help you need conveniently and without any barriers.

FAQs: Virtual Counselling

Does virtual counselling work?

Many people wonder if virtual counselling can offer the same results as in-person options, and the answer is yes. There is a surprising amount of research related to this question, most of which pre-dates the COVID-19 pandemic. It shows that virtual counselling is as effective as traditional in-person services. Outcomes and satisfaction are comparable in both methods.

Is virtual counselling secure?

As with all technology, there are risks to doing things virtually, but the right mitigation strategies can make the probability very low. When you engage in virtual counselling, Vanessa will tell you what measures protect your confidentiality and how Pivot ensures security compliance with the video chat platform in use.

Feeling safe is crucial. You are encouraged to ask for clarifications or other questions. If we can’t outline these pieces in a way that makes you feel comfortable, let us know. You can also consult with other counsellors until you find one where you feel confident and informed on the security protecting your confidentiality.

What are the benefits of virtual counselling?

Convenience and comfort are two of the most significant benefits of virtual sessions. You can access the help you need from a location that feels comfortable and safe for you. And you don’t need to worry about fighting traffic, bad weather, parking, waiting rooms, or any other stressors that come with face-to-face sessions.

  • Are you a parent? You might not need to arrange childcare.

  • If you’re doing couples or relationship sessions, you can join the session from different locations, making scheduling easier.

  • You can even have your pets join you in sessions or have any other comfort items in your space.

What might feel different about virtual sessions?

The relationship with your counsellor is the most critical factor in successful outcomes. It is normal to feel some initial hesitation about virtual counselling. Still, most people find that connection happens just as easily through video or phone as in person. At Pivot, we recommend connecting by video when possible because it comes closer to mimicking the in-person feeling. And while you may find a virtual session feels slightly awkward at first, you likely won’t feel like we’re in different rooms once we get into your story!

Are there any restrictions to virtual sessions?

Can I do EMDR virtually?

Yes! EMDR can be done just as effectively through video platforms as in person. Check out the EMDR page to learn more about how Vanessa uses technology to support the EMDR process in virtual sessions.

What else should I keep in mind about virtual sessions?

Here are a few tips to help make your virtual counselling experience more successful.

  1. Think about your space – Vanessa will ensure she is in a confidential room for your session, and it’s important that you think about your space as well. Can others hear you? What steps can you take to find a private space?

  2. Reduce distractions – Treat your virtual session like you are in an office setting by turning off your notifications and other apps on your devices. A session isn’t the time for multi-tasking.

  3. Make the most of technology – Try to be comfortable and familiar with the video platform for the session. Consider the angle and view of your camera so Vanessa can see your face and body to pick up on your non-verbal cues.

  4. Talk with your counsellor – We can work together to make the experience as positive as possible!
