General questions about counselling

FAQs: Counselling at Pivot

What should I expect in my first session?

All services start with a review of your rights and responsibilities while engaging in counselling and ensuring you understand the risks and benefits of counselling services. Then, we will get to know each other and explore what you seek support for, which will help us create a support plan.

Pivot Counselling is committed to maximizing your time in a session. We will keep things focused on the topics that are most important to you.

Will my information remain confidential?

Confidentiality is paramount; we keep your information private and stored securely. During your first session, Vanessa will walk you through a more detailed review of security, confidentiality, and the limitations. This includes special considerations with virtual service and confidentiality as well as secure storage of your information.

What are the service fees?

Counselling sessions are billed at $220.00 for a 50-minute session. Sometimes, clients prefer 75- or 100-minute sessions, which can be prorated.

Pivot Counselling requires 24 hours cancellation notice, or clients may be subject to the full session fee.

How many sessions will I need?

Every client has unique needs. Some clients find that one session is enough to help them find direction and run with new ideas. Others like regular check-ins to stay on track with their desired changes, while some find frequent sessions most helpful to support the shifts they are trying to make. Vanessa will work with the frequency that works best for you to support the concerns that brought you to counselling.

Will my insurance cover your service?

Vanessa McConnell is a registered psychologist, and most health plans cover services provided by registered psychologists. Still, we encourage all clients to contact their insurance and confirm their coverage and any limitations and restrictions in advance. Direct billing is not available, but you will receive a receipt by email on the day of your session with the information required to submit your insurance claim.

How do I know if it’s the right fit?

The most important factor in your success in counselling is the therapeutic relationship. Vanessa tailors her approach to each client to support a strong working relationship. Client feedback is welcome so Vanessa can adjust and meet your needs, but sometimes, it isn’t the right fit. Please let Vanessa know if your service doesn’t meet your needs. She would be happy to refer to another counsellor whose approach may be better aligned.

Can minors receive counselling?

Until they reach 18, clients are minors. Parents or caregivers must be involved and consent for the youth to participate in counselling. Whether you’re a young adult looking for support or an adult inquiring on behalf of a minor, contact Vanessa for more information. Email Vanessa at vanessa@pivotcounselling.org.
